Care & size guide.
Fabric-by-fabric wash notes, a pre-shrink primer for unstitched cloth, and a size chart in both inches and centimetres.
01
Fabric-by-fabric care.
Wash cold, line-dry in shade. These are the house rules. Fabric-specific notes below override general advice.
| Fabric | First wash | Regular wash | Iron | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pure cotton | Cold, separate | Machine, gentle cycle | Medium heat, damp | Colour may release on first wash — wash separately. |
| Mulmul | Cold, by hand | Hand-wash preferred | Low heat, on the reverse | Soft and lightweight; avoid wringing, squeeze gently. |
| Silk-blend | Dry-clean only | Dry-clean only | Cool, on the reverse | Never bleach. Spot-clean with a clean, slightly damp cloth. |
| Chiffon | Hand-wash, cold | Hand-wash, cold | Very low, on the reverse | Dry flat on a towel; hanging wet can stretch the weave. |
| Georgette | Hand-wash, cold | Machine, delicate bag | Low heat, on the reverse | Dry in shade; prolonged sun fades the dye. |
| Lawn | Cold, hand-wash | Machine, gentle | Medium heat, damp | Shrinks ~3% on first wash; pre-shrink before cutting. |
| Velvet | Dry-clean only | Dry-clean only | Steam, never direct | Brush pile in one direction after steaming. |
02
Before the tailor.
Unstitched cloth needs a once-over before cutting. These four steps save the kurta that would otherwise shrink after its first wash.
Shop unstitched- Cold-soak for 30 minutes. Plain water, no detergent. Cotton and lawn release dye on the first soak; rinse until the water runs clear.
- Gentle hand-wash. A mild detergent, no bleach. Don't wring — squeeze the water out slowly.
- Dry flat, in shade. Direct sun fades the dye and can warp the weave. A clean towel on a table works.
- Iron before cutting. A medium-heat iron on the reverse side, while the cloth is still slightly damp. This sets the final dimensions before your tailor cuts.
03
Size chart.

How to measure.
A soft tape, taken over light clothing or bare skin — not over a kurta. Stand relaxed, arms at your sides.
- Bust. Around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms. Tape parallel to the floor.
- Waist. Around the narrowest point, usually an inch above the navel. Don't pull tight.
- Hip. Around the fullest part of the hips, about 7–8 inches below the waist.
- Shoulder. From the outer edge of one shoulder seam to the other, across the back.
